The Dawson County Law Enforcement Center Dawson County's Law Enforcement Center was completed in July 1993 and can house 126 inmates. A jail staff of 27 working 12 hour shifts
are responsible for total inmate care. After an inmate is booked into our facility, they must be fed, given medical care and clothing, provided counseling, allowed physical exercise, transported to and from
court, or transported to other facilities.
The majority of the jail staff are certified officers. They must be constantly on alert for dangerous situations. To become a certified law enforcement officer, you must be 21 years of age and attend the
Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center for 12 weeks. During these 12 weeks, officers are trained extensively in all aspects of law enforcement. Application to the Training Center is taken seriously and
credits may apply to an Associate Degree in Business Management.
Dawson County Sheriff's Office In addition to the jail staff, the Dawson County Sheriff's Office has 16 certified law enforcement officers including the Sheriff and Chief
Deputy. The fourteen "road officers" are extensively trained in investigation, accident reconstruction, death scenes and many other facets of law enforcement. Officers are also called upon to perform
title inspections, issue handgun permits, handle complaints, serve warrants, receive and serve civil process and fingerprint for INS.
The Sheriff's Office and officers provide 24-hour coverage throughout Dawson County. The main office is open 5 days a week between 8 am and 5 pm.

Special Programs Our officers reach out into the community through the use of specialized officers. The DARE officer works with 5th, 6th and 7th
grade students to educate them against the use of alcohol and illegal drugs. The GANG officer works primarily in educating the community and working to dissolve gang activity. The C.O.D.E. officer works
directly with the investigation of drug activity.
The Communications Center The Communications Center is open 24 hours a day and may be accessed from the west side of the building. On a daily basis, we
dispatch for 5 different agencies--the rescue and fire departments and the utility departments for Lexington, Elwood and Overton. E911 Emergency and Lifeline calls are received and dispatched and fire and
burglar alarms are monitored.
