John Rohnert, 86, of Lexington, Nebraska, died Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington, Nebraska. He was born October 15, 1919, in Gering, Nebraska, to John and Mary
(Schmidt) Rohnert.
In 1930, John moved to Lexington where he attended school at Horseshoe Bend Country School. As a teenager, John, started his boxing career. He was a two time Nebraska State Golden Glove Champion and a
member of the Nebraska Boxing Hall of Fame in 1984. After retiring from the ring, John trained and coached many young boxers, and refereed many matches. He was united in marriage to
Doris Utecht on February 20, 1939, at WaKeeney, Kansas. Doris preceded John in death. John served in the United States Army during WWII, being Honorably Discharged in August of 1945.
Following his schooling, John worked on the farm, ground hay, and became a bouncer at the old Country Club. He then went into Law Enforcement and was a Dawson County Deputy for ten years and then
elected Dawson County Sheriff, where he served six terms for a total of twenty-four years. John was inducted into the Nebraska Law Enforcement Hall of Fame in 1994, he was a member of the Nebraska
Crime Commission, and served as a Dawson County Commissioner. In 1967, John was President of the Nebraska Sheriff and Peace Officer's Association. Throughout his years in law enforcement, John helped so
many young people who may have strayed down the wrong path. John will also be remembered for his love of hunting and fishing. In
1967, he and his hunting dog 'Duke' were featured in an issue of Field and Stream. He was a member of Trinity and Grace Lutheran Churches as well as
many other community boards and committees. He served many years as a 'Magician' for the Boy Scout Jamborees and other youth activities around Lexington. His quiet strength and sense of humor will always be
remembered as well as his love for his family. Survivors include two daughters: Jo and Keith Swartz of Lexington, Nebraska; Cindy and Gary Flint of Lexington, Nebraska. Two sisters:
Shirley Ford of Bertrand, Nebraska and Lillie and Augie Kolb of Lexington, Nebraska. Nine grandchildren: Jason, Justin & Jared Swartz, Mike, Kelly & Tim
McConnell, Kim McMahon, Heather & Jacob Flint. Seven great-grandchildren: Angelia, Ronnie, Michaela, Jalisa, Ronnie, Kaitlyn and Brian.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 62 years, Doris in 2001, two daughters, Sheila as an infant and Dian McConnell on December 25, 2005, and three brothers, Harry, Ben & Roy.
Services will be held Saturday, January 28, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Lexington with Pastor Megan Morrow, officiating.
Burial with Military Honors by the Nebraska National Guard Military Funeral Honors Team will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 27, 2006, from 2-7 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington. Memorials are suggested to Grace Lutheran Church, Lexington
Volunteer Fire Department or the Donor's Choice. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge of arrangements.
