WHAT IS ELDER ABUSE?
Signs of Elder Abuse:
The following signs should be regarded as suspicious and may be grounds for
further investigation:
Repeated injuries such as bruises, welts, burns or fractures.
Injury incompatible with explanation.
Lack of personal or medical care.
Malnourishment and dehydration.
Discrepancy between the adult’s financial resources and conditions of
housing, level of
personal care, nutrition, medical care, clothes, transportation and
social opportunities.
What Can You Do?
Be aware of the needs of the vulnerable adult.
Accept the responsibility to report persons in need of protection.
Be willing to assist in improving the quality of life for these adults.
Some vulnerable adults don’t know services are available or won’t
acknowledge their need for help.
Each individual has the right to:
Self determination, self-worth and dignity.
Be protected from abuse and neglect.
Privacy and confidentiality.
The least restrictive intervention to remedy the abuse and neglect.
